Gladstone Theatre
Ottawa’s home for independent theatre, providing an affordable and inclusive venue where diverse theatre companies and artists can bring their work to local audiences.
Challenge: Despite a year-round booking schedule, The Gladstone Theatre faced financial strain and an urgent need to diversify its revenue streams beyond earned income. The organization lacked strategic grant-seeking and needed a clear pathway to secure core operational and capital funding. Our Approach: Grant Solutions Canada (GSC) partnered with The Gladstone Theatre to stabilize and scale their fundraising infrastructure. Our team implemented a three-tiered strategy:
Grant Pipeline & Calendar: We developed a comprehensive 12-month rolling grant calendar, mapping out high-priority federal, provincial, and municipal opportunities to ensure consistent funding applications.
Capacity Building: We acted as a dedicated grant-writing partner, shifting TGT from reactive funding searches to a proactive, strategic approach. This included successfully identifying ~$200,000 in funding opportunities within our first two months of collaboration, and ~ $1,000,000 in funding for their full grant pipeline.
Strategic Growth: Beyond immediate funding, we scoped out "exploration" projects—such as the Canada Council-supported shared marketing feasibility study—designed to solve long-term operational bottlenecks, including patron data consolidation and marketing capacity.
Results:
Financial Impact: Successfully sourced ~$200,000 in new grant funding opportunities within the first reporting period.
Secured Core Support: Strategically aligned the theater's project work with core funding programs.
Operational Maturity: Transformed the theater’s approach to grant management, moving from ad-hoc applications to a systematized, sustainable grant-readiness framework that ensures the organization remains competitive for future funding cycles.
